Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes a great logo.
I have come up with the following criteria:
- Two colours. I think the greatest logos can be represented by just two colours, a background and a solid foreground. Sure there are some good ones that use more than just two, but I think the best ones don’t.
- No words. When you start spelling out your company in a logo it becomes language specific. Some logos can get away with it because of their unique typeface, such as Coca-Cola, but the ones I have picked below don’t use any words.
- Simple. No complex art or excessive design.
- Instantly recognisable worldwide. Some of the logos I thought about were extremely popular in Australia, but would mean nothing overseas. Notably the ABC logo.
So, here’s my top 5 logos. I’ve purposely not mentioned what they are, it should be obvious 🙂
And some others that didn’t make my top 5
