    What is: 4chan

Guides | Thoughts By 7 years ago

4chan is a social media tool used to share and comment on photos using a bulletin board style layout. Born in 2003 from the bedroom of a 15-year old student in NYC, the website’s intent was to discuss Japanese comics and television shows.

Tonnes of internet memes (images of catchphrases to travel fast, viral) have originated from 4chan, and content travels very fast. The most notable are lolcats, rickrolling and Chocolate Rain.

Unlike traditional forums, 4chan does not have a registration system, which means that users can post images and comments anonymously. Any nickname can be chosen with each post.

4chan relies on a network of moderators to look after its channels. Junior moderators are also known as Janitors.
